Namibia Biochar

This project's aim is to make Namibia the largest producer of biochar soil conditioner in Africa, directing carbon finance to impactful, scalable and credible climate action.

Planboo's biochar carbon removal project in Namibia is a groundbreaking endeavour with far-reaching implications. This pioneering project aims to make Namibia the largest producer of biochar soil conditioner in Africa. With the support of carbon finance, it addresses the pressing challenges of water scarcity and bush encroachment. In the pilot year, Planboo is experimenting and innovating by infusing 2000 tonnes of biochar into various applications, from rangeland restoration to incorporating it into chicken bedding, cattle feed, and liquid seaweed inoculation. This innovative approach reduces the use of agricultural machinery and fossil fuel emissions. The project tackles the 45 million hectares of encroaching bush, a threat to Namibia's savannah ecosystem, while creating green jobs in managing invasive species, biochar production and rangeland restoration. Planboo's project stands at the forefront of biochar technology. With state-of-the-art kiln retort technology verified by the Ithaka Institute in Switzerland, combined with IoT and digital Measuring, Reporting, and Verification systems, the project unlocks scalable, auditable biochar production. This comprehensive approach ensures quality, transparency, and permanence in carbon removal, qualifying for carbon credits (CORCS) under the Puro Earth standard. By utilising biochar, Namibia can combat climate change, enhance soil resilience, and reduce dependency on chemical fertilisers. The success of the pilot year has already led to the identification of a second site with the potential to produce 14,000 CORCs over 12 months. The expansion's possibilities are staggering, with the potential for hundreds of millions of tonnes of carbon removal in the next 25 years.
