A family-run supermarket in rural New Jersey chose a natural refrigerant cooling system in place of cheaper, traditional, climate-damaging refrigeration. The CO2 refrigerant rack system installed is a near-zero emission system and displaces traditional refrigerants that wreak an average of 3,448 times more damage to the environment. The change permanently and immediately reduces cooling emissions by nearly 99%, with no risk of reversal. The CO2 system also forgoes dangerous chemicals that leach into groundwater, addressing a critical concern in a community plagued by a historical EPA Superfund site. Natural systems can be cost-prohibitive–especially for small, local grocers. The Skylands Region Grocer project allowed a family-run store with a constrained budget to implement otherwise-expensive climate-friendly practices, reclaiming the community narrative around environmental justice and joining international organizations in the effort to combat climate change.
