Hasslacher Norica is a timber-producing facility in Austria that manufactures an innovative timber product called Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT). Cross-Laminated Timber is different from regular timber in the way its layers are structured at right angles, making the wood structurally rigid in both directions. This rigidity allows the use of CLT products in construction as a replacement for concrete products. The project uses the bio-based construction materials methodology of the Puro.earth standard.  Concrete accounts for 4-8% of carbon emissions annually and strong wooden building elements like CLT can replace concrete effectively. Each cubic meter of CLT is able to remove 585 cubic meters of CO2, which is additional to the avoided emissions from the replacement of existing products that typically emit 300 cubic meters of CO2 per cubic meter of concrete. This removed carbon is stored in the CLT for a minimum of 50 years.  The sale of carbon credits makes CLT competitive with current building materials, enabling faster replacement of higher carbon-emitting reinforced concrete beams. It also brings awareness about the environmental benefits of CLT to the construction industry.  The timber used to produce CLT is 100% FSC(Forest Stewardship Council or PEFC(Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) certified. Such forests plant 2-3 trees for every tree felled, naturally reducing the risk of wildfires and flooding. Wooden buildings that use CLT have higher breathability and the timber can be re-purposed at end-of-life.
