In this region, known for bamboo forestry and medium-scale industry, family-run processing centers generate substantial offcuts and smaller pieces from bamboo poles used in construction, agriculture, and fisheries. The project, led by co-founders Khom and Nui, targets this waste stream, which conventionally undergoes open incineration, contributing to pollution. Instead, the initiative collects bamboo offcuts and employs a team to transform them into biochar using two to four large Kon-Tiki kilns. This process not only prevents the release of smoke and greenhouse gases but also sequesters carbon dioxide into solid carbon, producing a valuable soil additive. Beyond its environmental impact, the initiative strives to establish a sustainable business model, providing economic opportunities for the local community.
