The Ecomapuá Amazon REDD+ Project is located on Marajó Island at the mouth of the Amazon River in Pará State, in Brazil's Eastern Amazon Rainforest region. The primary objective of the Ecomapuá Amazon REDD+ Project is to avoid the unplanned deforestation of an 85,000 hectare (210,000 acres) area within a private property on Marajó island, totaling 98,362 hectares. The Marajó várzea is a critically valuable ecosystem for many communities and animal species especially noted for its avifauna. Primary drivers of deforestation on Marajó island include legal and illegal timber harvesting, subsistence farming that relies on slash and burn practices for cultivation, and palm heart extraction, a supplementary income source for subsistence farmers.  Since 2003, Ecomapuá has successfully sequestered about 47,000 metric tonnes of CO2e each year and saved over 2,550 hectares (6,300 acres) of the forest. It is expected to permanently store more than 2 million metric tonnes of CO2e over its lifetime. Carbon credit revenue is essential for the project to compete with the profitable alternative land-use options of timber production and palm-heart extraction.  The project's location at the mouth of the Amazon river makes it an attractive habitat for a wide variety of birds and fish. Apart from preserving the critically endangered biodiversity, the project also supports the local community by providing infrastructure for health and education, promoting the sustainable cultivation of superfood ‘acai’ berries in the forest, and helping create alternate sources of income from permaculture.
