Ekovilla recycles wastes from wooden building element companies into carbon-negative cellulose fiber insulation (CFI) for buildings and prolongs the storage of CO2 by 50 years.
As part of a suite of carbon removal projects in the Nordic region of Europe, Ekovilla receives wastes from wooden building element companies to build and install carbon-negative cellulose fiber insulation (CFI) for residential and commercial buildings. Without recycling programs like Ekovilla, waste from wooden building elements production would have ended up in landfills. The recycled output also reduces the dependence on unsustainable materials like polystyrene and mineral wool for insulation. By following Puro.earth’s Wooden Building Elements methodology, Ekovilla CFI extends the 50-year CO2 removal period of sustainable wooden building elements by an additional 50 years. In addition, the use of CFI avoids the emission of 7 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of CFI used. Avoided emissions are not sold as credits and can be considered a co-benefit of Ekovilla’s projects. Ekovilla’s projects are reviewed by Carbon Plan, a non-profit research organization that analyzes carbon removal programs in addition to an independent verification for lifecycle analysis and environmental product declarations.
