The Great Bear Rainforest project in Canada protects temperate forests that are home to several endangered species and a large community of First Nations people.
The Great Bear Rainforest is a coastal temperate rainforest in the British Columbia region of Canada. The Glow Clean Air program, run by the non-profit organization, Tree Canada, covers 6.4 million hectares of land that is home to 26 First Nations. The GCA program calculates the carbon sequestered by trees accurately and creates carbon credits for purchase by individuals and businesses. The forest is protected by the Great Bear Rainforest legislation that prevents logging in 85% of the forest lands. The funds generated from the sale of carbon credits ensure that the ecologically sensitive rainforest is protected. The project employs an Ecosystem-Based Management (EBM) approach to protect the forest on Coastal First Nations land and stores carbon for more than 50 years. The project rigorously evaluates the carbon sequestered by old-growth trees in a given area and monitors it regularly. The specialized legislation protects this forest and keeps leakage risk low by preventing timber buyers from just shifting their purchase to a nearby area. Without the sale of carbon credits, local communities would have been forced to migrate to cities and depend on the forest for timber. It also goes towards providing livelihood opportunities for the indigenous communities. The specialized legislation also promotes preserving the cultural practices of the First Nations people and works to save the habitat for several endemic species including the marbled murrelet, northern goshawk, grizzly bear, mountain goat, and the tailed frog.
