Sustainable Grazing

Pastures, Conservation and Climate Action, Mongolia

The Pastures, Conservation, and Climate Action project helps prevent the release of CO2 from the soil in Mongolia and supports the development of nomadic communities.

Soil is a massive carbon storage reservoir that holds twice the amount of carbon as the atmosphere at about 1500 Gigatonnes. Human activities that affect the soil have a disproportionate impact on the amount of carbon it can hold. The Pastures, Conservation, and Climate Action project helps stop ecosystem degradation and prevents the release of CO2 from the soil in central Mongolia. This project is developed under the Plan Vivo Standard through a partnership between the University of Leicester and the Mongolian Society for Range Management (MSRM).  Nomads are facing an unprecedented loss of their way of life due to economic pressures. Their cow, goat and sheep herds overgraze the limited areas they have access to, degrading the soil and releasing the carbon stored in the vegetation and soil to the atmosphere. The sale of carbon removal credits provides an alternative source of income for nomads in 3 regions of central Mongolia - Tov Aimag, Arkanghai Aimag, and Bayankhongor Soum. It helps them regain their traditional way of life. In each area, a Heseg, or an extended family group, leads each local project and reports back to the MSRM. Using the Plan Vivo standard’s Small-Holder Agriculture Monitoring and Baseline Assessment (SHAMBA) methodology, the project empowers nomads to manage their lands and shift to traditional practices. The project accelerates the restoration of more than 77,000 hectares (190,000 acres) of grasslands. It also increases the uptake and storage of carbon in vegetation and soil by 25,000 tonnes every year, accumulating to 100,000 metric tonnes over the project’s initial 4-year commitment period. Additional benefits of the project include better access to education, healthcare, and the nomadic communities' socio-economic development without losing their unique ways of life.
