Biochar

NovoCarbo (C-Sink)

The NovoCarbo biochar project integrates pyrolysis equipment into industrial value chains in Germany, scaling the production of biochar that sequesters carbon for several hundred years.

Biochar is an organic, carbon-rich, material produced by burning forest wastes in the absence of air. The result is a stable granular product that can be used as a soil amendment to improve both nutrient and water retention. NovoCarbo creates Biochar at production facilities throughout Germany. Supporting circular economies, Novo Carbo integrates their pyrolysis equipment into industrial value chains, thereby allowing insetting for participating companies. All equipment is powered by local renewable sources with excess heat and energy is fed back to the grid.    NovoCarbo’s Biochar is of the highest quality and complies with the European Biochar Consortium standard. Apart from enabling insetting for Novo Carbo’s industrial partners, the project also avoids methane emissions from agricultural fields due to the use of unsustainable soil additives. By selling carbon removal credits, Novo Carbo can create Biochar that locks away carbon for up to 10,000 years. By increasing the number of industrial partners, the project aims to scale biochar production and sequester several tonnes of CO2 every year.    Biochar is sent to Beiselen, one of Germany’s largest agricultural retailers as a soil treatment product which is distributed throughout Europe. It is also used in water treatment, decarbonizing heavy textiles and for making sustainable building materials. It also has the potential to reverse soil degradation and desertification.
