Direct Air Capture

Orchard One

Spiritus offers scalable, modular DAC with a novel sorbent and a path to providing removal at $100/ton

Spiritus has developed a novel direct-air-capture (DAC) solid sorbent material and is developing the accompanying processes for megaton scale CO2 capture and sequestration. The solid sorbent is exceedingly low in cost yet has fast kinetics for adsorption and desorption. Our DAC process has been tailored to the unique properties and performance of the solid sorbent and is energy efficient, requires minimal capex investment, and can run effectively on a variety of renewable energy sources. The resulting levelized cost of capture (LCOC) is projected to be <$75/tCO2 and is <$150/tCO2 for the first-of-a-kind project.  \  \ We refer to our DAC approach as a Spiritus “Carbon Orchard.” Every Orchard uses passive air contacting (no fans), a low temperature desorption process, and a modular design that allows rapid scale-up. The raw material supply chains for the sorbent are already in existence to reach these scales. The low temperature thermal requirements allow for utilization of renewable energy sources, and future plants can be constructed anywhere there are renewables and sequestration.  \  \ Achieving DAC at <$75/tCO2 LCOC requires a Rubik’s Cube solution: all key parameters need to be optimized concurrently. Our sorbent and process optimize all major drivers of cost: energy input, sorbent cost and durability, adsorption/desorption kinetics, and facility capex. We have two primary innovations: a novel sorbent technology and a non-TVSA desorption process. We complement this with a solution that delivers high-quality CDR: MRV, attractive LCA, a viable risk-mitigated project, community engagement, environmental justice, and scalable approach to achieve GtCO2/yr removal.  \  \ To quantify the CDR of our project, we are partnering with a third-party, which is building a new methodology for DAC. In contrast to conventional solutions where removals are estimated on a project basis, this third-party builds technology that provides real-time verification for every ton individually through direct measurement of all critical data points.  \  \ Spiritus’ first carbon removal project is Orchard 1, located in the American West. Orchard 1 will start at >2,000 tpy with co-located geological sequestration, will go online in 2026, and will scale to 2 megaton per yer of carbon removal.  \  \ First CDR deals have been secured with Frontier Climate and Terraset. The deal with Frontier Climate includes purchases from Stripe and Shopify. Spiritus has also attracted additional purchases from large industrial emitters and other voluntary market buyers.  \  \ Spiritus is led by co-founders Charles Cadieu, PhD (repeat founder with multiple exits) and Matt Lee, PhD (bio-inspired materials expert, successes in national security and energy, 10+ years at Los Alamos National Lab). Spiritus is backed by Khosla Ventures, one of the premier climate tech investors
