Pyrocal - Wellcamp

The Pyrocal project in Australia converts organic materials into biochar that can store CO2 for thousands of years.

Biochar is a carbon-rich material produced from organic waste by pyrolysis or burning in the absence of air. The result is a stable granular product that can be used as a soil amendment that replaces emissions-heavy fertilizers and improves nutrient and water retention. Pyrocal follows the Puro.earth Biochar methodology to create biochar at its production facilities in South East Queensland, Australia. The facility receives an abundant supply of organic feedstocks from macadamia, pecan, and walnut processing plants nearby.  The project prevents the release of CO2 from the incineration of the waste products from these plants. Pyrocal processes these waste products to create Biochar with around 85% carbon content for mostly agricultural soil and stock feed amendments. It makes for a very effective carbon removal technology that can lock CO2 away for hundreds of years. It also helps in the prevention of methane release and soil degradation from traditional fertilizer use.
