This reforestation effort is facilitated by the nonprofit organization EthioTrees. It's a carbon offset project that supports soil and forest regeneration in the northern region of Tigray in the Tembien Highlands, Ethiopia. The northern Ethiopian plateau is at risk of desertification. For this reason, we chose it for our carbon offsetting project. In the EthioTrees project, CO2 is sequestered by planting native tree and shrub species, which leads to storage of carbon in the soil as well as in the vegetation. An important part of this project involves training the local population to protect the soil, setting up a maintenance plan that protects it from grazing and other damaging activities. These lands are entrusted to “landless farmers,” those who are not landowners. With EthioTrees, Davines creates opportunities for the involvement of women to carry out reforestation-related activities, in order to promote gender equality.
