The Soilfood Soil Amendments project in Finland converts pulp waste into natural fertilizers for farmers, storing carbon and reducing the dependence on harmful chemical fertilizers.
Organic matter from plants makes up the bulk of pulp and paper mill wastes, making it complex and expensive to recycle. More than 90% of such wastes are incinerated in Finland, which releases CO2 back to the atmosphere. Soilfood partners with pulp and paper mills in Finland to transform these wastes into natural fertilizers and soil treatments for farmers. By following Puro.earth’s Soil Amendment methodology, Soilfood’s products can slow the decay of organic carbon in the soil leading to an increase in farm yields by more than 1% and an improvement in the climate resilience of agriculture. They act as inert durable carbon compounds that lock away carbon in the soil for at least 20 years. Soilfood’s products also reduce the emissions of N2O in soils by a factor of 50x compared to typical chemical fertilizers used in Finland. Soilfood’s projects are reviewed regularly by independent assessors for lifecycle analysis and product environmental declarations. Co-benefits of using Soilfood’s fibers are shared equally with participating pulp and paper mills and farmers.
