Sri Lanka Rubber Biochar

By incorporating biochar into farming practices, Sri Lankan farmers can remove carbon, reduce their reliance on expensive chemical fertilisers and enhance soil health.

Lalan Rubbers is one of the largest plantation companies in Sri Lanka, and primarily focuses on rubber wood. They have set ambitious sustainability goals, and plan on becoming the most environmentally conscious plantation in the country. Their first-hand experience and close relationship with their land means they are truly aware of how devastating the climate impact is on soil health and crop yield, and they want to take action. In response to the alarming environmental reality of Sri Lankan agriculture, Lalan Rubbers reached out to Planboo. This collaborative biochar project has been activated by Lalan Rubbers enthusiasm to become a key player in our global fight against the climate crisis, and be at the forefront of regenerative, nature-based solutions, that will not only permanently remove carbon from the atmosphere, but rejuvenate soils, create organic biochar fertiliser and introduce carbon revenue to the region. The pilot project is currently operational at Udabage Estate. Once the pilot project has been established as a success, Lalan plans to scale up production to other estates by almost three times as much by 2024, and over five times by 2025, while also seeking to introduce larger and more efficient kilns.
