Biochar

Wakefield Biochar

Converts biomass waste streams to biochar. When applied to soil, the biochar stores carbon for hundreds of years and provides many other environmental benefits.

Wakefield BioChar is a minority-owned company focused on making our planet healthier through their “Better Soil - Better World” philosophy. The company is based in Valdosta, Georgia, a city that thrived from the forestry industry, specifically pine products, for over 100 years. Wakefield BioChar currently employs 23 individuals across its operations which focus on the management of pulp and paper mill waste. It is obvious to Wakefield that such wastes should be viewed as resources, a vision they have transformed into a sustainable business. Wakefield BioChar has created a series of branded biochar products and compost blends for major retailers across the country. In addition, they supply local farmers with biochar, spreading it on pasturelands to improve grass yields, as well as using biochar blends for land remediation projects. The feedstock is pine bark from FSC-certified forests. Carbon credits are key to expanding Wakefield BioChar’s business and their ability to sequester carbon.  Biochar has many uses. In Agriculture, biochar is spread on pasturelands to improve water retention and nutrient uptake. Biochar, and Biochar-compost are also used as a horticultural product. Biochar mixed with lime is used for land remediation projects. The application of biochar to soil helps to reduce run-off an nutrient leaching with beneficial impacts on aquatic life. Beyond the removal and storage of emissions, Wakefield BioChar is also responsible for reduced or avoided emissions, increased biodiversity, and other positive environmental benefits. These include improved crop and dairy yields, increased drought resilience in an area with a history of drought, adsorption of pollutants, reduction in fossil fuel-based fertilizer usage, and the creation of green jobs in a region designated by the IRS as a low-income/disadvantaged area.
